Edge Crack Type (IUA) is the most common type of gliding crack developed on highly inclined walled granite surfaces. Edge Cracks grow slowly and may release small amounts of material over a long period of time. They are capable of acting as a trigger for large wedge fractures.

A new cracked granite surface was developed on L'Isére Mtn. As seen above, it has now grown almost to the periphery. This crack is still very far from development of a wedge fracture, but this is to be expected near to a crack tip; the crack could go on growing for years to come. While it is possible for crack growth during rest periods, it is most often repeated and amplified during days when the environment is most conducive to crack growth. Adolphe Pierre on the right was last active on 10 May 2016. This image was taken on 17 August 2013. It shows the termination of a vigorous day of crack development. The NW-trending crack increases in length dramatically from this day forward.

The small sandy patch on the left of Adolphe Pierre was once on an active crest connecting the Central Pillar to the Maas via this ridge. Seen here as a bright striation is the cleavage plane of the ridge, cut by this growth. It is also the side of the crest with respect to the long curved crack that terminates Adolphe Pierre. d2c66b5586
