I love a good A-line dress for my apple shape, and this Anthropologie best seller is beautiful. They also carry dresses in petite and plus sizes online; they even have petite sections at my local Anthropologie stores!
To take attention away from the wider midriff, sleeves for an apple body shape should accentuate the upper body and arms. The best types of sleeves to take attention away from the midriff are detailed sleeves - such as slits, gathers, cuffs, and draped fabrics.
The best way to flatter the apple body shape is to choose open cardigans in draped fits, which are not so clingy. Make sure the garment ends below the hipline to elongate the figure and skim nicely over the torso and hips.
Since jumpsuits are generally fitted, they highlight the body's silhouette and can so be unforgiving. For the apple body shape, that means finding a jumpsuit that does not emphasise the wider midriff.
Particularly at City Chic, I love love love LURVEEEEE their plsu size rompers (and also jumpsuits, by default). I really think this brand designs for plus size apple shaped babes, who carry our weight in our respective bellies!
When it comes to what clothes to wear for an apple shape, there are several key tips to keep in mind. As ladies with an apple shaped body carry their weight around their middle and have broader shoulders, the main goal when picking out outfits is to even out your proportions by drawing the eye to either your decolletage or enviable legs instead. Some easy dressing tips for apple shapes include:
The apple body shape is a beautiful and unique shape that shines when dressed to highlight its best assets. Correctly identifying your body shape and then learning how and where to apply the focal points of your outfit can not only do wonders for your style but can also help you find confidence and strength through style.
An Apple body shape is characterized by a top-heavy figure. They can sometimes be confused with the inverted triangle body shape, however, the apple body shape (or oval body) has an undefined waistline. The apple body shape, like every body type, has some variations within the shape.
There is a misconception that apple body shapes are always plus-size people, which is completely untrue. There are all different size apple bodies, and the key to determining if you fit this shape is through your measurements.
The apple body shape is most often confused with the inverted body shape. Because as you saw in the above photo, there are two different shoulder shapes associated with the apple/circle/oval body. They can be broader with a full bust, which can mimic the same inverted triangle shape. However, the key differentiating factors are where they gain weight and the roundness of the bust, and the general lines of the body.
To a certain degree, using the fruit body types, your type can change as you gain weight or age. A lot of people find they become an apple body shape as they age. So there is some overlap between the different types, as well.
The rectangle body shape also has an undefined waist and well-proportioned figure, however they lack the curves and fuller bust shape that the apple is known for. Which means you may find yourself borrowing style goals from other body shapes depending on your unique proportions and style goals.
There are many different ways that an apple body shape can present and because each body is unique, you will have to create your own style recipe. This is why it is helpful to have that body empahsis list. Before you go in and buy every suggestion in this guide, double-check if it accomplishes what you want to highlight, and what you want to de-emphasize.
A lot of people with apple body shapes end up opting for baggy looks in order to hide their stomachs, and I must discourage this practice. You have a beautiful shape and there are more effective ways to dress it.
And because apple shapes have a full bust, bra shopping can be incredibly important. Your bust most likely needs real support, and if you lack that, the outfit covering it will not have a proper foundation.
The right jacket can look beautiful on an apple body shape, the V-shape lapel and visual neckline it creates highlights you bust nicely and visually draws the line down towards the ground (instead of horizontally).
If you want a more fitted dress option, or want to show off your body in its sexiest light, opt for a ruching or draping below the bust. This creates room for your stomach and creates less obvious shadow lines. It also prevents the silhouette from looking a bit lumpy. (this has nothing to do with size but the emphasis on the shadows created by the apple shape.)
Now, the general recommendations for the apple body shape for bottoms can vary quite a bit and this will come down to your proportions, and body emphasis points (which we went over in the first section).
In the below image, you can see how small outfit tweaks are used to compliment her apple body shape more effectively. The first outfit makes her stomach the focal point. There is a visual break between the top and bottom (color and texture-wise), and it is a cropped top. We could tweak this look by creating a column effect and wearing a monochromatic outfit. Or we opt for a shirt that has a longer hem and flares out, therefore drawing your eye down and balancing the overall silhouette.
Super skinny or tight shorts need to be longer in length and will depend on the individual. They can make some apples look top-heavy and unbalanced. If you do opt for a more fitted short, keep your top flowier or tunic-shaped.
Be sure to watch the proportions of your entire outfit. While the dress in the above image is a great casual silhouette for the apple body shape, the boots are shortening her look. Because there is a small chunk of skin showing paired with knee-high boots, her outfit is being visually divided three separate times in a small amount of space. This causes the eye to stop three times when taking in the outfit.
Talk about a fantastic and eye-catching look. This outfit proves that apple body shapes should not hide their bodies. The neckline shows off her cleavage, her waist is softly defined, and the skirt flares out nicely and balances out her lower half. Plus, this color is fantastic on her. If you want to learn more about choosing the right colors, check out my guide to seasonal color analysis, here.
If your goal is to highlight your best assets and downplay your least favorite, read on for a few styling ideas to help visually balance your proportions. This means de-emphasizing your mid-section and avoiding any unnecessary bulk for the apple shape. Avoid extraneous details from your hips to your bust because they draw attention to your midsection. Adding fullness and curves to your bottom half helps balance your midsection.
Look for bootcut, wide-leg, or flare legs that add balance to your wider torso. Skinny jeans or pants do highlight your fabulous legs, but they also make your torso look larger by comparison. Look for pants with a side zip or flat front. Pleats and visible gathers add extra bulk around the midsection, which is the opposite of what you need to balance your proportions. Wide-leg flowy pants are fabulous on the apple body shape.
Single-breasted jackets and coats are best on apple shapes. Avoid double-breasted and wrap coats that have an extra layer of fabric and add unnecessary bulk to the tummy area. Belted coats are also not your friend.

I am 62 years old and stuck in jeans and boxy blouses, which makes me look as if I have no legs and a fullback shape on top.I don't know where to start.Jane's answer... Firstly, are you sure you have one of the apple horizontal body types (that is, an oval or a diamond shape) Many women who think that's their shape are actually not. Your description of yourself as having 'a fullback shape on top' could also describe the inverted triangle or rectangle body shapes. It also makes it sound as if you might have broad and square shoulders. Or that look might be because of your full bust. Each scenario has a slightly different style solution, which is why it's important to identify your proportions correctly. The vertical body shape (where the fullest part of your bottom is in relation to your head and your feet) is also important for finding your best styles. In particular for the lengths of garments (both tops and bottoms). The visual effect of 'no legs' could be because you do have short legs in proportion to your body and the top styles you're choosing emphasize, rather then minimize, that. Or, it could simply be that you are wearing your tops too long.Step 1: Confirm your shapeStart by being sure of your proportions: Since it can be difficult being objective perhaps enlist the help of a friend to go through my self assessment here to checkOr use one of these online options, orIf you're in Sydney, come and see me for a 'Dressing your body shape' consultationAssumptions for examplesFor the purposes of the examples below I'll use these proportions:Have an oval-apple horizontal shapeHave a balanced vertical proportionHave a large bustAre average heightHave broad, slightly tapered shouldersProbably prefer to cover your upper armsStep 2: Understand all the shapes that flatter your proportionsSee this article for the main style aims for the apple shape. However, the My Private Stylist online style program gives recommendations that take all of your proportions into account. Find out more about that program here.Choose tops, and dresses, that skim over your torso, to hide any tummy rolls. Pay particular attention to the lengths of tops. The wrong length (usually too long) will make your legs look too short in relation to your torso.Boxy tops will work, but make sure they're in a soft flowing fabric. And do make sure they fit properly, especially around the shoulder, bust and arms. Also make sure that the bottom of the top doesn't flare out around, or under, your stomach, since this will make you look larger than you are. Tops in styles or fabrics that fall in a slight taper will be more slimming.
