It all adds up to an album that clings to the fringes of indie-rock and hip-hop without ever fitting in perfectly-- the greatest compliment I can bestow upon King Krule's alchemy. This is sort of what \"I don't know what else to say\" sounds like-- even if it sometimes sounds a lot like \"you're pretty crazy.\" The album's hazy, soulful, and hypnotic qualities are at their most apparent in the incandescent single \"When and Why,\" a song that hugs its singular mood without abandoning the listener. For a moment, you get the sense that Marshall is channeling Stevie Wonder, but then the song turns around, and suddenly he's breathing into your soul like the wind.

That is the human quality of his music. It's very immediate. If music invites emotion, King Krule's music does it often quite bluntly, and he illustrates what he wrote in the original liner notes that his music is built like a \"shooting gallery.\" It's a balance he's perfect at: The rapping is great; it's witty and playful, but never overdone; and his voice is empathetic when it needs to be, but distant enough when it needs to be; he's reserved, but once you get to know him, he's the friendliest person in the room and most of the time is just a huge ball of goof. His songs are accessible and simple, but it's complicated and desperately urgent.

In some ways, it's like the closest thing we've had to the Stevie Wonder of today in the past ten years. Many of those comparisons aren't even fair. Though the lyricist is an accomplished freestyle rapper, he's not a full on \"King\"-- unlike Wonder, he's an undervalued king of the underground, one who never became a star but still leads a far lovelier life in music than most stars ever will. He's Prince, and he's Beck, but the heir to a local indie success story. The full length, or full body, album is a surprisingly direct and straightforward rock album that comes with the shield of surrealist charisma.
