Over the last 150 years many substantial contributions to thescience and art of orthodontics in the form of scientific articles, textbooks, and master's and PhD dissertations have beenaccomplished and published. Collectively, this body of knowledgethat is now available is a product of hard work and greatimagination of many individuals. These accomplishments helped bringorthodontics and orthodontists to a reasonable level ofsophistication both diagnostically and technically. Metallurgicalinnovations of orthodontic wires, bonding of brackets, new bracketdesigns, and new imaging techniques have made orthodontics moreefficient, as well as more patient friendly. Although suchtechnical advances have had a significant impact on the practice oforthodontics, the clinician still must develop the sametime-honored skills to be able to properly diagnose and plantreatment for each patient. In other words, the clinician stillmust acquire certain basic tools that enable him or her tosynthesize relevant information. The clinician must then apply thisinformation to the individual patient in a systematic andconsistent way. This book is a modest attempt to provide suchinformation in a logical format that helps students of orthodonticsboth understand and apply the basic concepts of diagnosis andtreatment. Without such a basic foundation, diagnosis and treatmentplanning for a malocclusion becomes a difficult and misguidedexercise for which prospective patients will bear the consequences. The contributors to this text have worked hard to present theirideas in a format that is both clear as well as scientific. Readingthe works of all of these authors has been an education as well asa revelation of the depth of their understanding and theirabilities. To each one, I owe a debt of gratitude! The text isorganized into six sections: Section I: Growth and Development. This section describes the overall physical changes that occurbetween the embryonic stage and adulthood. Special emphasis isgiven to the normal and abnormal development of the facialstructures as well as to the development of the dentition and theocclusal relationships from the primary to the permanentdentitions. 2b1af7f3a8
